The medersa was again rebuilt by the Saadian sultan Moulay in the 16th century having originally founded by the Merinid sultan Abou El-Hassan in the mid-15th century. One of Marrakech’s most historic Islamic monuments, it lingers today among the region’s most splendid examples of Islamic art. Enjoy a cup of herbal tea with a peaceful book of your choice to get involved into the Arabic dynasty. Also, fresh air lingers in and around this place to enjoy solitudeness.

Get, set Statue – Go on a compulsory visit to DAR SI SAID MUSEUM

One of the awesome things to do in Marrakech Morocco in a week is to spend some time visiting this museum as it has got an excellent collection of antique Moroccan perfect artifacts and crafts. The museum contains a particularly impressive riad, built in the 18th century by Si Said, brother of Vizier Bou Ahmed of Bahia Palace celebrity. Although modest in size when compared to the Bahia Palace, this central building is surrounded by courtyards with graceful arcades. Nicknamed as a Home to the Museum of Moroccan Arts since 1932, it is found scattered around the labyrinthine basement floor including an enthralling selection of Moroccan artifacts – carefully carved wooden panels and painted Shell doors; very old Qurans and antique leather bags; a fascinating portrayal of Berber daggers; jewelry made of ruby, amber, ivory, and silver; and also brightly colored traditional clothes and fabrics used for the same. Besides these, it’s the building itself that deserves a close look. Glittering corridors eventually lead to a central back courtyard that is filled with flowers and fancy trees.

It is embellished with a beautifully tilted fountain set underneath a painted wooden gazebo and gorgeously well-painted and tiled doors to all four sides. It was transferred to Morocco from Islam by Almoravid Caliph despite its decorative eagles and gryphons, which depict the Koran’s prohibition of artistic representations of living things. Prefer the staircase that leads to the gigantic Reception Room. A highlighted jewel of Moorish design, its dome, zellij tiles, and a stucco frieze are a more romantic sight. The first floor is home to a couple of traditional wedding palanquins and village carpets. What is even more interesting is that it was left unsold by the Almoravid dynasty’s equally unknowing successors, the Almohads. The collection of carpets is top-picks and is good information about the dynasty, weaving methodologies and craftsmanship of each piece. There are also some display cabinets with silverwork and intricate wooden boxes. DON’T MISS THIS! The entrance fee may cost up to 70 MAD and do try to check out on weekends as well to enjoy even more.
